ABOUT THE COURSE: Italian 102 is the continuation of Italian 101. It completes the introduction of the basic structures of the language. Although the course will emphasize the development of the four skills associated with language learning —speaking, understanding, reading, and writing— it will also continue to provide insights into Italian culture

PREREQUISITE: Completion of English 300 or higher.

ABOUT THE EVALUATION: There will be 11 quizzes; the lowest grade will be dropped. The class grade will be based on participation. Obviously, in order to participate, you must be present in class. The assignments will include a header and will be numbered sequentially. The folder will be collected occasionally at unannounced intervals. Grading will be "A" (complete & corrected) or "F".

MATERIAL TO BE COVERED: We will cover the second half of the material in your textbook.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is absolutely required by the college and by the nature of this course. In this class, unlike others where you go and listen to the instructor and take notes, you are required to participate actively. Obviously, if you are not in class, you will not be able to participate. Please be prompt. Class starts and ends at the established times. If you come late, you may be marked absent. If you have more than five hours of absences, your grade may be dropped a full letter grade or you may be dropped from the class altogether.

METHODOLOGY: We use a modified version of the Direct Method. The approach consists of the following steps: I say something in Italian and all of you repeat it. I tell you the meaning either by translating into English or by showing you a picture. I ask a question and answer it myself. You listen to the question as well as the answer, then I put the same and slightly different questions to several of you. When we finish the oral part, I will write examples on the blackboard and give you a brilliant explanation that will make everything clear. Sometimes my explanations are not so brilliant and you are then encouraged to ask questions. I prefer that you refrain from asking questions until after I have given my explanation.

GRAMMAR: This is not a grammar class. We emphasize communication, not grammar. However, once in a while I will use some grammatical terms which I will always clarify. I will not spend a great deal of time clarifying these terms which I consider to be basic and expect that you have already learned in another class. Some of these terms are subject, verb, object, adjective, adverb, article, etc.

CREDIT/NO CREDIT: This course is available on a Credit/No Credit basis. Credit/No Credit means that instead of getting a letter grade on your transcript, you will get CR (credit) or NC (no credit). You will get CR if you receive a grade of C or higher, NC for a grade of D or F.

TUTORING: Tutoring is available free of charge in the Tutorial Center located in the Learning Resource Center (library).

FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available in the Financial Aid Office.

ABOUT THE COURSE: This course is Italian 101, Elementary Italian, the most basic Italian course we have at Allan Hancock College. Students who have taken Italian in high school or who have learned the language in some other way, should probably take a more advanced course. In this particular class we start from zero. In other words, we assume that you know little or no Italian.

TEXTB00K: Conversation in Italian: Points of Departure, 3rd edition, by Paolozzi & Sedwick.

ABOUT THE COURSE : This course emphasizes the oral aspect of the language. Very little written work is done in this class. The class is conducted entirely in Italian. The prerequisite for the course is at least one semester of college Italian (Italian 101) or the equivalent.

CREDIT/NO CREDIT: You may take this course on a Credit/No Credit basis. This means that instead of receiving a letter grade, you may get CR (credit) or NC (no credit) on your transcript. CR means that your grade would be C or above, NC means that your grade would be D or F. If you are not sure which option would be better for you, see me after class and I will help you decide.

TUTORING: Tutoring for this class is available in the Tutorial Center located in the Learning Resource Center. Tutoring is free of charge.

FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available through the Financial Aid Office.

There will probably be six vocabulary quizzes. The lowest grade will be dropped. Class participation means active engagement in the class activities. The homework is normally discussed in class. Occasionally I will collect it.

Here we let loose our imagination and come up with very interesting ideas. In addition, we always make comparisons with our own reality, i.e. what we do in similar circumstances.
